Arizona's Endangered Species

Apache Trout - copyright Jennifer Johnson, US Fish & Wildlife Services Welcome to Arizona, a state that is home to some of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the country. From the desert to the mountains, Arizona's habitats are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including many species that are endangered. Did you know that there are currently 44 endangered species and 21 threatened species(at the time of this writing) living in Arizona? These include birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and plants, all of which are protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 was established to protect and recover species that are in danger of extinction. The Act provides protection for endangered and threatened species as well as their critical habitats. Animals on the below endangered list are classified as either endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. The status designates the level of threat to their existence and determines the amount of legal protection they are entitled to. For clarification on the terms of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 visit there website at Federal Wildlife Service

While it's rare to encounter an endangered species while exploring Arizona's natural beauty, it's important to know what to do if you cross paths with one. MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE, DO NOT APPROACH and please enjoy the view. DO NOT disturb the animal, and give them plenty of space and move on to your next destination. These animals are protected by law, so it's important to respect their habitat and behavior. By doing this, you're helping to ensure their continued survival for generations to come.

So, whether you're a new resident or a first-time visitor, we invite you to get to know Arizona's endangered wildlife. Through awareness and education, we can all work together to protect these fragile species and the unique habitats that they call home.
