Wild About Wetlands!

Splash into Arizona's wonderful watery places!

What Are Wetlands?

Wetlands are special places where water and land meet! They might be marshy areas around lakes, streams that only flow part of the year, or springs in the desert. Even though Arizona is mostly dry, we have some amazing wetlands!

Wetland Fun Facts!

Nature's Filters

Wetlands clean water naturally by filtering out dirt and pollution!

Frog Homes

Frogs and toads need wetlands to lay their eggs and raise their babies!

Bird Vacation Spots

Many birds stop at wetlands during their long migrations to rest and eat!

Sponge Power

Wetlands soak up extra water during storms, helping prevent floods!

Wow!

Even though Arizona is one of the driest states, it has over 600 riparian areas (areas along rivers and streams) that support important wetland habitats!

Wetland Wizard Quiz!

Test your wetland knowledge!

  1. Name three animals that live in wetlands.
  2. How do wetlands help prevent floods?
  3. What kinds of plants grow in wetlands?
  4. Why are wetlands important for birds?
  5. How can you help protect wetlands?

(Find the answers in our activities section!)

Types of Arizona Wetlands

Riparian Areas

These are the green areas along rivers and streams. Tall trees like cottonwoods and willows grow here, making cool, shady spots that animals love!

Cienegas

These are marshy areas fed by springs in the desert! They're like oases with wet, spongy ground and lots of special plants that need wet feet!

Mountain Meadows

High in the mountains, these wetlands form in flat areas where snow melts and rain collects. They're full of colorful wildflowers in spring!

Amazing Wetland Animals!

These critters make their homes in Arizona's wetlands:

Frogs & Toads

These hopping amphibians lay their eggs in water and catch bugs with their sticky tongues!

Herons & Egrets

These tall birds with long legs wade through water to catch fish and frogs for dinner!

Beavers

Nature's engineers! Beavers build dams that create ponds and new wetland habitats.

Dragonflies

These colorful insects with four wings start their lives underwater before flying above!

Be a Wetland Protector!

Here's how YOU can help keep wetlands healthy:

Keep Water Clean

Never throw trash in streams or ponds. Even trash on land can wash into wetlands when it rains.

Save Water

Use less water at home so there's more for wetlands and the animals that live there!

Stay on Trails

When visiting wetlands, stay on marked paths to protect fragile plants and avoid disturbing animals.

Spread the Word

Tell friends and family why wetlands are important and how we can protect them!
